Teaching Through Technology Guide: Introduction to PowerPoint

What is PowerPoint?

PowerPoint is a presentation-graphics software package that helps you create professional presentations quickly and easily. PowerPoint has many features including text, graphics, charts and media that help you with your presentation. Using Powerpoint, you can also create speaker notes, outline pages and audience handouts all within one presentation.

How TSS Can Help

Top 10 Tips

  1. Use good contrast between your text and background colour
  2. Minimize the number of words you use per slide.
  3. Upper and lower case is easier to read than ALL CAPS.
  4. Use graphics where appropriate or to make information clearer.
  5. Don't crowd your information. If it looks like too much information for one slide; break it up over several slides.
  6. Highlight important points in your presentation with colour rather than underline
  7. Use one slide transition throughout your presentation.
  8. Test your presentation prior to the main event to catch any bugs.
  9. Make sure the people at the back of the room can read your presentation as well as those sitting at the front.
  10. Use clipart, video and audio when appropriate, not simply because you have it.
