Provost’s Award for Innovation in Teaching

Background and Purpose of the Award
The Provost's Award encourages and celebrates the effective use of
innovation in teaching for the enhancement of student learning.
Using technology in novel ways is encouraged.
Normally, nominations are made by College Deans or Dean's Councils.
Nominations are also welcome from other areas of the University.
Value of Award and Eligibility
- Two awards at $2,500 each.
- Individuals or groups are eligible
for nomination. Recognizing that the development of courseware
often involves a team approach, teams may include faculty, graduate
teaching assistants, and professional or support staff. All nominees
must be affiliated with the University of Guelph.
Criteria

Nominee(s) will have designed and employed an
innovative teaching and/or assessment strategy to enhance student
learning in a course or set of courses. Eligible projects include
learning objects, tutorials, modules, online activities, entire courses,
or an entire curriculum.

Nominations must demonstrate the effective use
of innovation in teaching.

The innovation must have contributed to the
achievement of the learning objectives for the module, course,
or program and enhanced the learning experience for students as
demonstrated via learner results and/or evaluation.

The innovation may also be a conceptual revision
of a course, module or program leading to an enhanced learning
experience for students.

The approach serves as a model that is scalable
and may be replicated in other courses and/or other disciplines.
Categories
Nominations may be for an entire course, curriculum, module or course
components.
Nominations made for an entire course or curriculum
may include:
- in-class courses: this includes any University
of Guelph course that has a full classroom component
- blended courses: any University of Guelph course
that combines online and face-to-face delivery
- distance education courses: this includes any University of Guelph
online distance course administered through the Office of Open Learning
Nominations involving modules or course components
may include:
- learning objects: a self-contained unit of
instruction used to help achieve a specific learning objective or
objectives (e.g., a simulation)
- learning activities: a unit of instruction
facilitated through technology that students work on collaboratively
(e.g., online discussion)
- tutorials or modules in the context of a wider
course or program of study
Award Administration
- Nomination packages must be submitted to the
Provost by April 16, 2008
- The selection committee will include the AVPA
as chair and a committee of faculty, students, and staff. The
selection committee will make a recommendation to the Provost.
- Awards will be announced at the annual Teaching
& Learning Innovation conference.
Nomination Submission Packages
1) Letter of nomination highlighting the contents of the nomination
package in relation to the criteria for the award.
2) Sample of the innovation or the entire artifact. This may
include:
a) website (include guest access if password protected)
b) CD-ROM, or
c) in the case where the innovation is not presentable
via computer, a document containing a description of the innovation,
and copies of materials or other facsimiles (e.g., colour screen images)
3) Nominee Application and Report, including:
a) a brief description of the project and why it
is innovative
b) the specific learning objectives being achieved
through the innovation
c) the benefits to students as a result of this innovation
(and how it is consistent with principles of effective pedagogy and
good teaching practice)
d) supporting evidence for claims a. through c.,
which may include data collected to evaluate the impact of the innovation,
course evaluations, at least one letter of support from a peer and at
least two letters of support from students.
