Learning Strategies and Approaches of Successful and Unsuccessful Students

Helping Your Students to Become Successful Students

In the Classroom . . .

"Learner-centredness is an approach to education that aims at developing in each student as early as possible, a sense of responsibility for his or her own learning."

Making Change: The Strategic Plan for the University of Guelph, June 1995

Through its mission statement and strategic planning process, the University of Guelph has made a commitment to being a research-intensive, learner-centred institution. Learner-centredness is an approach to education that emphasises self-reliant learning, which involves setting learning goals and monitoring one's own growth and development. Learner-centredness also includes making explicit the research/teaching link, skill development, and experiential learning. For this approach to be successful, an academic environment must be fostered in which students are actively supported as they take responsibility for their own learning. As a TA you are an important component of the learning environment at the University of Guelph. TAs are often the 'front line' people who, along with faculty, support students during their various learning experiences. This chapter will help you understand more about the learning process as well as successful learning strategies that you can use to help your students develop.
