In the Classroom . . . |
"Teachers who acknowledge diversity at the beginning
of the course by indicating that they welcome different perspectives and
want to accommodate different needs set the tone for students to feel respected
and free to communicate with the teacher."
Nancy Chism in Teaching Tips, 1994
As you start to prepare for your first day of class it is important to spend
some time thinking about . . .
- Who might your students be?
- What similarities or differences should you expect in your students?
- How might their needs impact how you lead a lab, facilitate a discussion,
mark a paper, or support them during office hours?
- What support is available to you if you want to learn more about the
specific needs your students may have?
The following section has been designed to help you begin to answer some
of these questions. Hopefully, it will also help you become more aware
of the value that exists in working with a diverse group of students.
