In the Classroom . . .

  1. You are TAing a course for the first time and you are responsible for running seminars each week. Part way through the semester, your students begin to complain that they have never heard of some of the topics you have been bringing up in the seminar. You attend some of the lectures and realize that the course instructor has a preference for discussing topics other than those listed on the course outline. You now understand your students' confusion and concerns about the midterm that they will have in two weeks. What would you do?
  2. This semester you have been given a half-time TA position, which is great, because between your course load and volunteering activities you don't have much time. You have been keeping track of your hours as the course instructor asked and so far you have been able to keep your time to 5 hours/week on average. However, you realize that your students will be handing in their major lab report in two weeks. The time you will need to grade these reports will be on top of your regular hours. The course instructor is fairly open to discussing issues with you but s/he did say that it was your responsibility to make sure you did not go over your allotted hours. What would you do?
