All graduate teaching assistants (TAs), sessional lecturers, and undergraduate TAs at the University of Guelph are members of Local 3913 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). With approximately 1,000 different members throughout the year, this local Union is the largest on campus and in the City of Guelph. We are also affiliated with other CUPE unions both provincially and federally, and with the Guelph and District Labour Council.

As the largest union in Canada (with about 500,000 members across the country), CUPE is a politically potent force that defends the rights of its members and strives to protect the quality of life of all Canadians. The Union executives are elected by the membership and are graduate students and university employees just like yourself. We employ a professional business agent for two days a week and a part-time administrative assistant. If you're having a problem, give us a call right away. We can offer confidential advice, representation in your dealings with the University, or even act on your behalf.

General Membership Meetings are held approximately 5 times per year and all CUPE 3913 members are welcome. TAs are members of Local 3913 for up to one year after your last TAship at the University of Guelph.

Our collective agreement allows for membership representation via stewards for each department and college. College stewards receive a small honorarium and many steward positions are open. Interested members should contact the CUPE Local 3913 office for more info on becoming a steward.
